Installing a timber veranda

A timber veranda goes up in four stages: foundations, frame, roof and finishing. With our numbered kits the frame usually stands within a weekend with 2 or 3 people and some DIY experience. We do not install ourselves, but if you would rather not do it, we are happy to put you in touch with a local tradesperson.

Before you start

  • Check on delivery that every part is there.
  • Put the frame up within 1 to 2 weeks of delivery if possible, and keep the timber covered and sheltered until then.
  • Check whether you need permission, see planning permission.

Tools

A long spirit level and ideally a laser for the foundations, a heavy rubber mallet, a lump hammer, a drill with bit holder, a spade, a hand saw and a circular saw.

The four stages

  1. Foundations: a hole at least 40 cm deep for each post, all level, pads about 15 cm above ground. See veranda foundations.
  2. Frame: start with a back corner post, plumb it and prop it, then the other posts, braces and wall plate. Tap the oak pegs into the pre-drilled holes.
  3. Roof: rafters, boarding and fascias, then EPDM or another covering.
  4. Finishing: walls, sliding glass doors or steel doors, and oil on the timber.
