About Hardwood Discount: Ipe specialists

Hardwood Discount was founded in 2014. For fencing and decking we sell one timber: Ipe. That is deliberate. Working with a single hardwood means we know it inside out: how it moves, how to fix it and how it looks years later. You order online and get advice from people who handle it every day.

Why only Ipe?

Because it performs best in the jobs we do. Ipe is durability class 1 under EN 350, the highest class, and lasts 25+ years. For a fence or deck one more thing matters: thin, narrow boards have to stay straight. Of the timbers we compared, Ipe has the lowest shrinkage across the width, and the French research institute CIRAD rates it as a "stable wood".

We used to sell bankirai as well. We stopped, because quality varied, partly because several species are sold under that one name.

One system for fencing and decking

  • Boards with a groove along the long edge for a black-coated stainless steel clip, so no screw heads on show.
  • An end-matched tongue and groove, so boards click together lengthways.
  • A chamfer on every end, giving a double V at each end joint.
  • Fixed sizes: decking boards 21 x 140 mm with an 8 mm gap; fence slats 21 mm thick in 50, 70 or 90 mm widths, or 40 x 40 mm battens, with a 5 mm gap.
  • Fence slats are fixed to 60 x 60 mm azobe posts. A post sits in the ground and needs a different timber from a slat.

Everything comes as one kit: boards, posts, clips and screws.

Three countries, one speciality

We supply the UK, the Netherlands and Germany, each with its own shop. The same timber, the same system and the same sizes everywhere. Order a free sample to see the colour and feel the weight of Ipe before you buy. Our advice team is available on weekdays.

Legal and traceable

We buy all our Ipe in line with European timber legislation (EUTR): the origin and legality of the timber must be traceable. On top of that, Ipe has been listed in CITES Appendix II since 25 November 2024, so every import needs a permit. Read more on our page about origin and CITES.

Not just Ipe

Alongside fencing and decking we build bespoke canopies and garden buildings in solid Douglas fir or oak, using mortise and tenon, half lap and dovetail joints. More than 200 high-end garden buildings have been delivered since we started.

Customer projects

Real projects say more than we can: projects for inspiration.
