Teak garden gate with 70 mm slats

Looking for a garden gate to match your teak fence? This gate has a black steel frame with vertical teak slats on both sides, 70 mm wide and 21 mm thick. Teak is a yellowish brown and develops a golden sheen over time. 70 mm slats sit between the narrow 50 mm and the wide 90 mm. The linear pattern is clear but calm and works in almost any garden.

It is built exactly like our Ipe garden gate with 70 mm slats: the same frame, the same fittings and the same clips. Only the slats are teak. The teak gate costs 10% less than the same gate in Ipe.

What is in the kit?

• Matt black coated steel gate frame, 30 mm thick, with no diagonal brace
• Teak slats, 21 x 70 mm, 2.10 m long, enough for both sides
• Black hinge pins, hinges and a black cylinder lock
• Clips and screws for hidden fixing. Each clip doubles as a spacer, so the gap is 5 mm throughout

The gate is 1.00 m wide. Frame and slats together are about 70 mm thick. You set the height yourself by cutting the slats to length, up to 2.10 m.

Why choose teak for a gate?

A gate hangs on hinges and is opened and closed every day. Teak weighs around 670 kg/m³, Ipe around 1,050 kg/m³. A teak gate is therefore much lighter. You notice it when hanging the gate and in the load on the posts.

Teak moves very little: shrinkage is 4.7% tangential and 2.6% radial, compared with 6.4% and 5.1% for Ipe. The slats stay straight and the gaps stay even.

Teak contains natural oils and feels smooth. Our teak comes from a plantation in Africa.

On a wall or on posts

You can fix the frame straight to a wall or hang it on a post. Use a 60 x 60 mm azobé post, 3.00 m long, or an extra heavy 140 x 140 mm Ipe gate post. If you use a post on one side, put one on the other side too. It looks more balanced.

Fitting in four steps

1. Cut 3 slats to size and fit them horizontally inside the frame.
2. Place the first vertical slat over the lock case, mark the holes and drill them out.
3. Fix the other slats to the horizontal slats with the clips. Screw the first and last slat through the frame. Pre-drill the frame for this.
4. Cut the slats to the height you want, up to 2.10 m.

Care

Teak is naturally durable and needs little looking after. Outdoors, every timber weathers to a silver grey over time, teak included. To keep the golden brown colour, treat the slats with hardwood oil. Oil works like sun cream on your skin: the wood repels dirt and water and stays more stable.
