Teak privacy fencing with an acoustic EPDM membrane

Teak fencing with an EPDM membrane between the posts is fully private and takes the edge off noise from the road or next door. The membrane sits out of sight behind the teak slats. With slats on both sides, the fence looks finished from either side.

In short: there is a 5 mm gap between the teak slats. Close up and at an angle you can sometimes just see through it. An EPDM membrane between the posts closes that off and softens noise. You add it in the fence calculator with the fence. It helps with privacy and everyday noise, but it will not turn a garden fence into a motorway noise barrier.

Why add a membrane to a teak fence?

  • No gaps to see through. Without a membrane, low sun or garden lights can show thin lines through the gaps. With one, the surface is solid.
  • Less noise. EPDM is a heavy, rubber like sheet that absorbs sound. Voices, children playing or next door's pool pump sound softer.
  • Less wind. A solid fence also keeps draughts off the patio. Set the posts extra firmly, see how to install teak fencing.

Where the membrane goes

The EPDM membrane goes over the posts first, then the slats are fixed in front of it. From the front you only see teak. With slats on both sides, the membrane sits between the two layers and the fence is finished on both faces. That build gives the most sound reduction.

Which slat width for a calm garden?

For sound the width hardly matters; for the look it does. 90 mm slats give a calm surface with few lines, 50 mm looks finer and busier, and 70 mm sits in between. All three have the same 5 mm gap.

What a fence cannot do

To be straight with you: sound also travels over a fence. The taller the fence and the closer to the source, the more it helps. Next to a busy road you get the most from 2.0 or 2.1 m with slats on both sides. Choose the height on bespoke teak fencing.

Teak privacy fencing FAQs

Can I add the membrane later?

With slats on one side that is awkward, because the membrane sits behind the slats. Order it with the fence in the calculator.

Can you see the membrane?

Not from the timber side. With slats on one side, your neighbour sees the membrane between the posts. If you would rather they did not, choose both sides.

Does the membrane stand up to sun and rain?

EPDM is a rubber that copes with water and sunlight. It sits behind the timber and gets little direct sun.

Does a solid fence put more load on the posts?

A solid fence catches more wind. Set the posts firmly, and on an exposed site use postcrete.
