Double teak garden gate

For a driveway or a wide entrance. You get two steel gate frames, each 1.00 m wide: an opening leaf with a lock and a fixed leaf. You clad both frames on both sides with vertical teak slats. Teak is a yellowish brown and develops a golden sheen over time.

You choose the slat width: 50, 70 or 90 mm. Add the width you want in the comments box in your basket. Pick the same width as your teak fence and everything will line up.

It is built like our slatted double Ipe garden gate. Only the timber is different. The double teak gate costs 10% less than the same gate in Ipe.

What is in the kit?

• 2 matt black coated steel gate frames, 30 mm thick
• Opening leaf with black hinge pins, hinges, cylinder lock and black handle
• Fixed leaf with black hinge pins, hinges and a black drop bolt
• Teak slats, 2.10 m long, 50, 70 or 90 mm wide, enough to clad both frames on both sides
• Clips and screws for hidden fixing, with a 5 mm gap

Sizes and space needed

Each leaf is 1.00 m wide. You need at least 2.03 m between the posts: 2 x 1.00 m plus 10 mm on the left, 10 mm on the right and 10 mm in the middle. Leave 30 to 50 mm clearance at the bottom so the gate swings freely. You set the height yourself by cutting the slats to length, up to 2.10 m.

A double gate is heavy, even in teak. We recommend our extra heavy 140 x 140 mm Ipe gate posts, set in concrete. That way the posts will not lean or sink over the years.

Why choose teak for a gate?

A gate hangs on hinges and is opened and closed every day. Teak weighs around 670 kg/m³, Ipe around 1,050 kg/m³. A teak gate is therefore much lighter. You notice it when hanging the gate and in the load on the posts.

Teak moves very little: shrinkage is 4.7% tangential and 2.6% radial, compared with 6.4% and 5.1% for Ipe. The slats stay straight and the gaps stay even.

Teak contains natural oils and feels smooth. Our teak comes from a plantation in Africa.

Care

Teak is naturally durable and needs little looking after. Outdoors, every timber weathers to a silver grey over time, teak included. To keep the golden brown colour, treat the slats with hardwood oil. Oil works like sun cream on your skin: the wood repels dirt and water and stays more stable.
