With a teak gate the fence needs to be at least 2.0 m, because the gate's steel frame is 1.9 m tall. In England a fence up to 2 m generally needs no planning permission, or 1 m next to a road.
| Height | Privacy | Teak slats 50 / 70 / 90 mm | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.8 m (6ft) | Seated on the patio | about 33 / 24 / 19 | Same height as a 6 x 6 ft panel |
| 2.0 m | Standing up too | about 36 / 27 / 21 | Minimum with a gate, the usual permitted limit |
| 2.1 m | Where next door is higher | about 38 / 28 / 22 | Check with your council first |

Most adults can see over 1.8 m when standing. At 2 metres you can stand in your own garden unseen, and a terraced garden instantly feels sheltered. Taller is rarely needed and makes a small garden darker. To cut noise as well, choose 2 metres with a membrane, see teak privacy fencing.
In England a fence, wall or gate up to 2 m high generally falls under permitted development, or up to 1 m next to a road used by vehicles. Listed buildings, conservation areas and some new estates have their own rules, and the rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Check with your council before you build.
The black coated steel frame of a teak garden gate is 1.9 m tall, so the fence around it must be at least 2.0 m or the gate stands proud. The gate hangs on a 140 x 140 mm gate post.
A panel fence has a post and a seam every 1.8 m. Our teak fencing is built from loose slats that run on lengthways, so you choose the height and the length independently. How to set the length is on bespoke teak fencing.
1.8, 2.0 or 2.1 m. Need another height? Message us on WhatsApp at +49 2821 7483051.
More than 1.8 m, as there are more slats. From £296.92 per metre at 1.8 m; the calculator prices 2 m exactly. See teak fence cost.
The steel frame of the teak gate is 1.9 m tall. A 2 m fence lines up neatly with the top.
About a third of the post length, set in postcrete on an exposed site. See how to install teak fencing.
