Why craftsmen choose mortise-and-tenon and half-lap joints
A mortise-and-tenon joint is a centuries-old technique: a projecting piece (the tenon) fits precisely into a corresponding recess (the mortise) in the connecting beam. In a half-lap joint, each beam is milled out to half its thickness, so the two parts sit flush together. Both techniques have proven storm-resistant over centuries, without a single screw involved — the frame stays clean and uncluttered, as in traditional timber construction.
On heavier, larger structures, joints are additionally reinforced with recessed steel connector plates, fully concealed within the timber. This keeps the look traditional and hand-crafted, while the structure meets the highest standards for strength.

This mass is exactly what sets one of our canopies apart from a standard garden building kit: it's built to last for decades, for generations.

What determines the price of a bespoke luxury canopy?

Yes. You send in a sketch with the desired dimensions and layout, after which we put together a bespoke quote and, once approved, prepare a numbered construction drawing. Our customer service team actively works with you throughout this process.
Which timber is more exclusive: oak or Douglas fir?
Solid oak is considered the most exclusive choice: heavier, with a distinctive patina that develops over time. Douglas fir is warmer in colour and lighter in weight, offering better value for money — and is just as much a genuine, hand-crafted choice.
Is a crane needed to install a large, heavy canopy?
For the heaviest, most solid structures, assembly with a crane is sometimes indeed necessary due to the weight of the beams. For smaller or lighter designs, assembly with 2 to 3 people is usually sufficient.
Do you also handle the installation of the canopy?
In addition to supplying the numbered build kit, we also offer an installation service on request, so our fitters can assemble the canopy for you.
