Making a pergola

How to make a wooden pergola is something you will learn quickly in this article. Building a pergola does not have to be difficult at all. Such a construction of hardwood provides extra atmosphere in every garden. Beforehand, you should really take into account several things. We give you all the tips and have the ideal step-by-step plan for assembling a pergola in your garden yourself.

SHAPE AND USE OF THE PERGOLA

Pergolas come in different shapes and sizes. The most famous are the pergolas where grape plants can grow endlessly. Especially in sunny periods, these grape pergolas create a lot of atmosphere. Of course, a pergola is the ideal location for extra shade during sun-drenched periods. Usually, pergolas are square in shape, but it is also possible to make a round pergola.

MAKE YOUR OWN PERGOLA WITH HARDWOOD

A pergola is suitable for any garden. Especially when you make the pergola yourself, you can determine how big all parts will be. At Hardwood Discount you can even choose to order a pergola construction kit. Here we use only wooden foundation posts and planks that provide a pergola of top quality.

At Hardwood Discount, you can choose from various types of wood. For the construction of your own pergola, we recommend oak or Douglas wood. Oak is heavier, more durable and has a naturally more luxurious look. Douglas wood is cheaper and easier to work with. Which type of wood you choose therefore depends partly on your personal preference and budget.

Build your own pergola in 4 steps

Whether you choose a standard pergola or a custom-made construction: building a pergola yourself is in most cases the same. Follow the step-by-step plan below (or the video) to correctly install the pergola in your back garden. Of course you can also always use the supplied step-by-step plan.

1. MEASURING AND DIGGING

First of all, measure where the pergola is to be placed in your garden. You can use stakes and wire to indicate the surface area. Then dig holes about 60 centimetres deep for the foundation posts. Each hole should be the same depth. Depending on the type of pergola, more or less space may be left between the posts.

Tip: Make sure that the bottom of the hole is even, so that the posts are easier to stand straight.

2. INSTALLING THE STRUCTURE WITH CONCRETE

Then place the first piles of the construction straight into the hole. We recommend pouring quick setting concrete into the hole afterwards, as this hardens faster than cement. After approximately 1 hour, quick setting concrete is cured and you can proceed with the next step. With normal cement you should wait approximately 24 hours.

Tip: You can at Hardwood Discount concrete legs bijorder. This makes the construction sturdy and extends the life of the wood. Moreover, you then do not need to use cement.

3. ASSEMBLING THE CONSTRUCTION

Not a screw is used in the assembly process of our pergolas. The entire structure is pre-manufactured with mortise and tenon joints. Simply tap the wooden pegs into the pre-drilled holes of the first foundation post. This ensures a sturdy construction, without conspicuous drill holes.

Assembling the Pergola

Then place the second foundation post and mount a beam between both posts. Repeat these steps with the other foundation posts and beams. As mentioned, all parts are numbered, making the assembly process easy.

4. FINISHING THE PERGOLA

You have now finished building the pergola and can start thinking about the finishing touches. For example, place climbing plants along the posts, finish the pergola with lighting or paint (parts of) the pergola. Of course it is even an option to turn it into a covered pergola.
