What goes into an Ipe deck?

A good deck starts underneath the boards. We recommend Ipe for the joists as well, so you never have two timbers working against each other and the frame lasts as long as the boards.

  • Decking boards: Ipe, 21 x 140 mm, with a groove along each side for the clips and a tongue and groove joint at the ends.
  • Frame: Ipe joists, spaced 40 to 45 cm apart.
  • Fixings: black coated stainless steel clips and screws. No screw heads on the surface.
  • Weed membrane: laid under the deck to stop anything growing through.

Why the boards are quick to lay

The board ends have a tongue and groove, so the boards click together lengthways and you do not have to land every end joint on a joist. Each end joint has a bevelled edge, which gives a neat double V at every join. It looks smart and is not possible with the traditional way of laying decking. The clips set an 8 mm gap between the boards.

Boards usually come in 120 and 150 cm lengths. Short lengths are always straight, so there is no need to pull them into line the way you would with 4 metre boards.

Maintenance: not essential, but worth it

Ipe is naturally very durable and lasts 25+ years untreated. We still recommend oiling it. Think of it like wax on a car: dirt sticks less, water runs off, and the timber stays more stable in hot or wet spells, with fewer hairline cracks. Our oil for hardwood decks is made for exactly this.

Plan your deck

The decking calculator works out how many boards, joists and clips you need. For a step by step guide, see create a decking. All board sizes are listed under Ipe decking, and finished customer decks are in decking inspiration.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an Ipe deck last?

25+ years, even without maintenance. Regular oiling keeps the surface looking better and more stable.

How far apart should the joists be?

40 to 45 cm. For 21 x 140 mm Ipe boards that gives a solid deck with no bounce.

Will I see the screws?

No. The boards are held by clips in the side groove, and the black coated clips and screws disappear into the gap.
