The boards have a groove along each side for the clips and a tongue and groove at the ends, so they click together lengthways. Every end joint has a bevelled edge, which gives a neat double V where two boards meet, a finish you cannot get with the traditional way of laying decking. The clips set an even 8 mm gap.
The materials
- Boards: Ipe, 21 x 140 mm, usually in 120 and 150 cm lengths. Short lengths are always straight, so there is no need to pull them into line.
- Frame: ideally Ipe joists, 40 to 45 cm apart, see Ipe joists.
- Fixings: black coated stainless steel clips and screws, see hidden deck fixings.
- Weed membrane under the deck, see anti root matting.

Care
Ipe does not need maintenance to last 25+ years. Oiling is still worth it: like wax on a car, dirt sticks less, water runs off and the timber stays more stable in hot or wet spells. See oil for hardwood decks.

Is Ipe a luxury decking timber?
Yes. It is one of the densest hardwoods used for decking and lasts 25+ years outdoors without treatment.
Will I see any screws?
No. The clips sit in the side groove and the black coated clips and screws disappear into the 8 mm gap.
