Our verdict point by point

PointOur verdict
DurabilitySteel profiles on twin rollers, with soft close that slows the door at the end. We do not quote a lifespan in years, as we have no measured data for it.
AppearanceSteel profiles with glass and see through. The track and rollers stay visible and are part of the industrial look.
InstallationThe track is fixed to the wall above the opening. Nothing goes into the ceiling.
MaintenanceNo timber to treat. Clean the profiles and glass as you would any internal steel door.
PriceMade to measure, so the price depends on your sizes. You can work it out in the calculator.
Lead timeMade to order, 6 to 8 weeks.

What convinces us

  • No ceiling work. The door hangs from a track on the wall, so the type of ceiling does not matter, plasterboard included.
  • No door swing. The door glides in front of the wall. Nothing has to stay clear in front of it, which frees up space in a hallway or kitchen diner.
  • Soft close. The door slows itself at the end and does not bang into the wall.
  • Two rollers per door. They carry the weight of steel and glass and keep the door running smoothly.
  • Light and see through. With safety glass in the steel frame, both rooms keep their daylight, even with the door shut.

The downsides

  • 16 cm clear above the door. The track and rollers need that space. If the opening runs almost to the ceiling, this version will not fit.
  • Empty wall beside the opening. The door slides across the wall, so there is no room there for a cupboard, picture or switch. How much you need depends on the door width.
  • Handle in the opening. With the door open, the handle stays in view and narrows the opening slightly.
  • Not a framed door. The door hangs in front of the opening and is slightly wider than it. It does not seal as tightly as a door in a frame.
  • Not from stock. Every door is made to measure. Allow 6 to 8 weeks.

Who it suits, and who it suits less

A good fit for

  • Homes with a plasterboard ceiling, or a ceiling you would rather not drill.
  • Anyone who likes the industrial look of visible rollers.
  • An opening with enough empty wall beside it and 16 cm above the door.

Less suitable for

  • An opening that runs up to the ceiling.
  • A wall beside the opening with a cupboard, radiator or switch.
  • Anyone after the best possible sound insulation.

Comparison: rollers or ceiling track

The alternative in our own range is a steel sliding door on a ceiling track. That one hangs from the ceiling instead of the wall.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do you need above a sliding door on rollers?

16 cm above the door, for the wall track and rollers. Beside the door you need empty wall, depending on the width of the door.

Can you fit a steel sliding door on rollers with a plasterboard ceiling?

Yes. This door hangs from a track on the wall, not the ceiling, so the ceiling type does not matter.

What is the lead time for a made to measure steel sliding door?

6 to 8 weeks. Every door is made to your sizes.
