Single or double sided teak slatted fence: which to pick?

What is the difference?

On a single sided fence the teak slats are fixed to one side of the Azobe posts. From the other side you see the posts and the backs of the slats. On a double sided fence both faces are clad. The posts disappear completely between the two layers, and you only see them at the first and last post.

When single sided is enough

  • The fence stands in front of a wall, shed or garage.
  • There is a dense hedge or planting behind it.
  • The back is on your own land and out of view.

You only pay for the side you see, and it goes up faster.

When double sided is the better choice

  • The fence is on the boundary and your neighbours look at the other side.
  • It stands on its own in the garden, for example as a screen by the patio.
  • You want an EPDM membrane between the slats, completely hidden.

EPDM membrane with either option

You can add an EPDM membrane behind the slats, for privacy and less noise. There is more on this under teak privacy fencing. On a single sided fence it sits at the back and shows from that side. On a double sided fence it sits between the two layers of slats.

What about the price?

At the same height, double sided costs a little under twice the single sided price, because you need two layers of slats but the same posts. Current prices per running metre are on the product page. For comparison, teak is 10% cheaper than the same fence in Ipe.

What both options share

  • Teak slats 21 mm thick and 50, 70 or 90 mm wide, fitted horizontally.
  • Azobe (ekki) posts of 60 x 60 mm, set in the ground.
  • Hidden clips, a 5 mm gap throughout, black coated stainless steel screws.
  • Tongue and groove slat ends, so you can lay them staggered.
