Our verdict point by point

PointOur verdict
DurabilityStrong. Ipe is durability class 1 and the Azobe posts are suitable for ground contact. We count on 25+ years.
AppearanceBroad, calm lines with few gaps. Warm reddish brown to olive brown with natural colour variation. No posts on show.
InstallationClips and the click joint on the slat ends keep it straightforward. At 1.80 m high you fit about 19 rows, against 24 with 70 mm slats.
MaintenanceBasically maintenance free. We do recommend fence oil.
Price per metreSingle sided about £327 (1.80 m), £341 (2.00 m) or £358 (2.10 m). Double sided about £592, £652 or £682.

What convinces us

  • A calm boundary. At 90 mm you see fewer horizontal lines. The result is a clean face that suits a contemporary house or a larger garden.
  • The gap sets itself. The clip doubles as a spacer, so the gap is 5 mm throughout and the clip itself is barely visible.
  • Click joint with a double V. The slat ends lock together with a tongue and groove joint. Where two slats meet you see a fine double V, not an open butt joint.
  • Staggered joints, little waste. The end joints shift from row to row. You cut very little off and save time.
  • Posts out of sight. The slats run across the Azobe posts and cover them.
  • Same price as 70 mm. Per metre the 90 mm slat currently costs the same as 70 mm, with fewer rows to fit.

The downsides

  • Can look heavy in a small garden. The wide slat makes a bold face. On a narrow town plot a finer slat often works better.
  • The back of a single sided fence. Single sided means one face is clad. From the other side you see the posts and the back of the slats.
  • Cutting needs good tools. Ipe blunts blades quickly. Use carbide and dust extraction, as the sawdust can irritate the skin.
  • Can bleed. Ipe contains a dye that dissolves in water. Light coloured paving can show some staining at first.
  • Turns grey without oil. Left untreated, Ipe weathers to silver grey. Durability stays the same.
  • Price. An Ipe fence is not a cheap fence. You buy it for 25+ years.

Who it suits, and who it suits less

A good fit for

  • A larger garden or a contemporary house with clean lines.
  • Anyone who wants as few gaps as possible and a calm face.
  • A fence that lasts 25+ years without compulsory upkeep.

Less suitable for

  • A small town garden where you want a fine pattern of lines. Choose 50 or 70 mm.
  • Anyone who wants both sides to look finished but orders single sided.
  • A project where the lowest price comes first.

Comparison: 90 mm or 70 mm slats

The alternative in our own range is Ipe slatted fencing with 70 mm slats. The system is the same: the same clips, posts and 5 mm gap. The difference is the look.

Our advice: for more privacy and less noise, add an EPDM membrane behind the slats. With a double sided fence it sits between the two faces. Prices on 4 November 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is a wide slat fence more expensive?

Not with us. Ipe fencing with 90 mm slats currently costs the same per metre as 70 mm: about £327 at 1.80 m high, single sided. You do fit fewer rows.

Can you see the posts on a wide slat Ipe fence?

Not on the clad side. The slats run across the 60 x 60 mm Azobe posts. On a single sided fence the posts show at the back.

How wide is the gap between the slats?

5 mm. The clip doubles as a spacer, so the gap is the same everywhere.
