EXAMPLE: MAKING YOUR OWN IPE WOOD FENCE

The following 4 steps summarise how you can easily make a wood fence yourself. Further on in this article you will find an extensive step-by-step plan.

1. MEASUREMENT OF THE FENCE

Always start by measuring where the posts are to be erected. Then make sure the ground is level. This step is always important, regardless of whether you are using ready-made elements or loose fence planks. Then dig the holes to place the fence posts.

2. INSTALLING THE FIRST POST

Start with the first post. This is usually in a corner or against a wall. The depth of the first post determines the height of the fence. If the ground is sloping or inclined, you may have to place a different size of post in some holes. If a post has a curve, point the curve in the direction of the fence, the ipe fence boards cover the entire post, there is no trace of this.

3. ASSEMBLING THE SECOND POST

Then place the second post of the fence. Make sure both posts are level and at the same height (you can also choose to saw off the top of the post after installing the planks). Firmly tap into the ground and make sure the posts cannot move. Use the garden hose to spray the hole along the post so that the ground sinks in and the post is more firmly in place.

4. MAKING THE OTHER PARTS OF THE FENCE

Then you can attach the boards horizontally between the 2 uprights. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to build your own fence. When installing the loose fence planks, the clips determine the distance between the horizontal planks. Place each board at the ends with 1 clip at the top and 1 clip at the bottom of the board, this way the board is properly locked in and cannot work.

BUILD A FENCE

There are several ways to build a fence. The best way is to start with the first question: what do you want the fence to look like? With our Fence Calculator you can easily design a fence that fits perfectly in your backyard. Then you must determine which materials are best to be used in the fence. Hardwood Discount chooses the most durable solution, hardwood. Hardwood is a durable product, the advantage is that the product lasts a long time and it gives the fence a beautiful authentic look.

WHERE WILL THE FENCE BE PLACED?

A logical next question is where to place the fence. The weather and especially the wind will determine the strength of the fence. This means that the anchoring of the fence must be taken into account. A fence that is sheltered or one that is on an open terrain determines the depth of the anchoring. Obviously a fence on an open terrain has to be anchored deeper.

THE LENGTH OF THE POSTS

If the composition of the soil is stable and the fence is placed in an urban area, posts with a length of 3.00 metres can be used. If the fence is to be placed in an open, non urban area, we recommend using posts with a length of 3 metres. It is customary to bury 1/3 of the posts in the ground.

FENCE CONSTRUCTION

There are many different ways to build up a fence. The construction with half-timber wood or ready-made fence panels. Another possibility is the use of horizontal fence planks. The poles of the fence can be made with 6,5 cm thick poles or if you want a more chique look you can choose 8,5 cm thick poles. There are many possibilities so we can offer a solution for every taste. The thickness of the material plays a role in the lifespan. The thicker the material, the longer the lifespan.

TOOLS REQUIRED TO MAKE A FENCE

A long spirit level, and if you wish, a laser to mark out the height of the posts

  • A heavy rubber hammer and an iron mallet
  • A drill with a bit holder
  • A shovel
  • A handsaw
  • A hand circular saw or circular saw table
  • 2 persons with light construction experience are desired

STEP 1 OF BUILDING A FENCE

It is important that the fence as a structure is always level. The posts of the fence must also be level at the top. The first step is to determine where to place the posts. This positioning depends on the elements used. Are you using ready-made elements or are you incorporating loose fence planks, these will determine the distance of the holes.

Start with the first hole at the beginning of the fence. Dig this first hole shovel width, the hole must be deep enough to fit 1/3 of the length of the post. Repeat this operation for the 2nd post you are going to place. All the holes you are going to dig should have the same depth and they will be straight or level with each other. It is best not to dig all the holes at once. This will prevent any deviations causing a hole to be in the wrong place and, more importantly, double work.

It does not matter whether you dig and install one or more posts. The procedure is virtually the same. If you need any tips, if you have questions or if you would like further explanation, please do not hesitate to ask us for advice. Every situation is different and we will do our best to offer you the best possibilities.

STEP 2 OF MAKING A FENCE

Once the first post has been dug, it will determine the height of the entire fence. It is important to take a sloping or ascending garden into account. Measured from the first post, you must take this into account and when the ground slopes, it may be necessary to use longer posts.
If you would like more advice, you can always call us or e-mail us a photo of your garden. We will then give you appropriate advice.

STEP 3 OF MAKING A FENCE, ASSEMBLING THE 2ND POST

For the assembly of the second post it is important which elements you have chosen. If you are working with ready-made elements you can follow the instructions under A. If you have chosen for loose fence planks you can follow the instructions under B.

A. Screw screen supports to the first post, you will need 2 or 3 of these per post. Screw the element to the post and support the screwed element on the other side at the bottom. Then adjust the fence element horizontally. After adjusting the fence panel, you will immediately know the distance to the second post and the height of this post.

B. Start by measuring the distance you wish to have between the posts. You can set the posts a maximum of 2 metres apart. The closer the posts are to each other, the more stable your construction will be.

Now dig the hole for the second post. Place the post in the hole and don't worry if the posts are not exactly the same depth. Screw the fence board at the top horizontally to the first post. Level the fence board and now it is important that both posts are at the same height. Fix the posts in the ground and firmly pound the soil. To make sure the first posts are stable, it is best to brace the posts with a rope or batten. To achieve the best result it is essential that the first two posts cannot move.

It is also important that the posts are vertically level. By bracing the poles with a batten, a rope and a picket fence post that you drive into the ground next to the fence, you can ensure that the poles remain in place.

STEP 4: INSTALL THE REMAINING PART OF THE FENCE

Repeat the steps described in steps 1 to 3 for the remaining posts. With a ready-made fence the assembly of the fence will be faster. When you use separate elements you will have more adjusting, measuring and aligning work. You will be more flexible in the final result.

When using separate fence boards, now mount all other boards on either side of the installed posts. The most common is to use a space of 7 cm between the horizontal planks. The closer the planks are mounted, the less one can see through the fence. So when you want more privacy in your garden, we recommend reducing the space between the planks.
